How To Play Texas Hold’em

Blinds:

The value of the blinds you choose will dictate how big the stakes are in your poker game. After using a randomizing method to choose who the dealer will be, the player to the left of the dealer will be the “small blind” and the player to their left will be the “big blind” The small blind amount will always be half the big blinds amount. For example the blinds might be $1/$2 meaning the small blind is forced to put out $1 and the big blind is forced to put out $2.

Once everyones initial two cards are dealt “Hole Cards” The value of the big blind represents the minimum amount each player in the hand must pay in order to continue in the hand and be eligible to try to win the pot. Each player will have an opportunity to raise the amount of this minimum bet. In that case the new amount will be the minimum amount everyone must match in order to continue in the hand.

Hole Cards: Immediately following both blinds being posted, the dealer will deal out two face down cards to each player. These cards represent a players hole cards which only they will have access to the entire hand. To see a Texas Hold’em starting hand rankings chart click here.

Community Cards:

By the end of a poker hand the dealer will have placed five community cards on the board. These cards are available for all players to use. Players must choose the best five card poker hand from the seven they have to chose from (Two face down in their hands and the five community cards) Players may and often will be using the same community cards, they do not become unusable just because another player is using them in their poker hand.

Betting Rounds:

There will be a betting round once you have received your two Hole Cards. Once that betting round is complete the dealer will fan out ” The Flop” which are the first three community cards and there will be second betting round. When betting round of the Flop is complete the dealer will put down the fourth community card called “The Turn” and have another betting round. When The Turn betting round is complete the dealer will put out the fifth and final card called “The river” and the players will complete the final betting round.

Pre flop the betting begins with the player to the left of the big blind and continue in this directional order until the big blind completes his or her betting.

The first player to bet pre flop is called “Under The Gun” this player has three optoins

  1. Look at their hand for free and then fold with no investment into the hand
  2. Look at their hand for free and then pay the amount of the big blind (call) to continue in the hand and see the flop
  3. Look at their hand for free and then raise the minimum bet to an amount higher than the big blind (minimum raise is 2x the big blind) If a player choses to raise now the remaining players in the hand must match this amount if they wish to continue in the hand.

Once the first player is done with their decision the action moves onto the player to their left who will have the same three options. Once all players have either matched the highest bid or folded the dealer will fan out the flop and from here on out each betting round will begin with the player to the left of the dealer button and continue in a clockwise motion as it did pre flop.
